Dr. Mirza Akmal Husain, fondly known as Aku, was a man of many talents and accomplishments. Born in the historic Mirza Mahal, the house of the British Deputy Magistrate late Mirza Ibrahim Hossain, in Daulatpur, Khulna, Bangladesh, he was destined for greatness from a young age.
His intellectual prowess was evident in his passion for chess. He was a two-time national chess champion in 1975 and 1976, a testament to his strategic thinking and competitive spirit. His love for the game led him to form close relationships with notable figures in the chess world, including Bangladeshi grandmaster Niaz Murshed and Woman International Master Rani Hamid.
However, Dr. Mirza Akmal Husain Aku’s accomplishments were not limited to the chessboard. He was a highly respected ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist, having earned his MBBS degree from the prestigious Dhaka Medical College. His dedication to his profession was evident in his tireless service to his patients. He began his medical practice in Daulatpur, Khulna dispensary, before moving to Dhaka to start his own dispensary. His commitment to his patients and his expertise in his field made him a beloved figure in the community.
Dr. Mirza Akmal Husain Aku, beyond his professional commitments, was a dedicated family man. He was wed to the now-deceased Dr. Rezina Rahman Hamid, who was employed at Cantonment General Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh. They both also held the role of family physicians for the Mirza family. The couple had two children: a daughter, Moushumi Mirza Shumi, who is a successful entrepreneur, and a son named Mirza Tapash.
Dr. Mirza Akmal Husain Aku was often found watching cricket matches on television. His love for the sport was just another facet of his multifaceted personality.
Regrettably, Dr. Mirza Akmal Husain Aku departed this life in 2006, but his legacy of distinction endures in both his professional endeavors and personal virtues. His spouse, Dr. Rezina Rahman Hamid, followed him in passing on June 18, 2022. Though they are no longer with us, their significant contributions to their fields and the profound influence they had on their patients and loved ones remain honored and cherished.
